Balayage for Diverse Hair Types: Asian, Afro-Caribbean & European Hair

At Marbella Hair & Beauty Salon in Camberwell, we've spent 20+ years hand-painting Balayage on every hair texture, from fine European hair to dense Asian hair and curly Afro-Caribbean coils. Here's how we adapt the technique to your hair.

    What is Balayage?

Balayage (French for "to sweep") is a freehand colour technique. Instead of foils packed to the root, colour is hand-painted onto the mid-lengths and ends so it grows out softly, with no harsh regrowth line and fewer salon visits. It's the most requested colour service at our Camberwell salon.

    Balayage on Asian hair

Asian hair is typically dark, dense and resistant to lift. It often carries warm red or orange undertones as it lightens, which is why untrained bleach jobs can go brassy. Our approach:

    • Slow, controlled lift over two sessions when going more than 3 levels lighter.
    • Bond-protecting Olaplex added to every lightener mix to preserve the cuticle.
    • Custom cool toner (ash, mushroom, smoky brunette) to neutralise warmth.
    • Face-framing money pieces to add dimension without over-processing.

Popular finishes: caramel bronde, smoky brunette, mushroom balayage, honey ribbons.

Balayage on Afro-Caribbean and curly hair

Curly, coily and kinky hair is more fragile than straight hair; the cuticle is raised along the bends, so moisture and bond integrity are the priority. What we do differently:

    • Curl-by-curl painting so highlights sit along the curl pattern, not across it.
    • Gentler developer (10-20 vol) and longer processing over aggressive lift.
    • Olaplex No.1 & No.2 in-salon, plus a deep hydration treatment the same day.
    • Aftercare plan: sulphate-free shampoo, weekly protein/moisture mask, silk pillowcase.

Great for: 3A-4C curls, locs (partial), transitioning hair, protective-style prep.

Balayage on European & fine hair

Fine or previously coloured European hair lifts quickly but can look thin if highlights are placed too high. We use micro-sections and a "shadow root" to keep depth at the top and brightness through the ends, the look grows out beautifully between visits.

    Aftercare that lasts

    • Wait 48-72 hours before the first wash.
    • Use a sulphate-free, colour-safe shampoo.
    • Apply a bond or hydration mask weekly.
    • Always use heat protection before styling.
    • Book a gloss/toner refresh every 6-8 weeks to keep tone cool.

    Prices & consultation

Balayage starts from £150 depending on hair length, density and starting colour. We always offer a free consultation before any colour service, especially important for Asian and Afro-Caribbean hair, where a strand test protects the integrity of your hair. See the current price list on our balayage & highlights page.
